Sandymount Terns II

Wednesday 8 September, 2010 3 comments

Sandymount, Dublin, Wednesday 7pm. Four seasons in one sky.

Standing in the same spot - this was the sky to the right of the sun..

...this was the sky to the left of the sun.

I was back down at Sandymount to maybe see some waders and to see the Tern display again. With the sky suggesting a huge downpour, I left my scope in the car and nearly stayed in the car myself, but I got out and risked a walk across the long stretch of sand.

This was well worth getting out of the car for - you can see the rainbow ending on the sand

Right on the Gulls, Hooded Crows, Oystercatchers, Curlews and other waders

This is the closest I've ever been to the rainbow colours coming down from the sky, in front of the houses and onto the sand and birds. If I had kept walking would I have met the rainbows end?

Will this be one of the last evenings the Terns will be around?

I'd guess about 2000 Terns this evening.

I’m afraid this is as far as I went to get photos. There were a few people with scopes and cameras and I didn’t want to get too close to the Terns that they flew off to the Poolbeg side of the strand (where they were on Sunday).  I waited for quite a while to see a Big diaplay, but up until 8.30pm this group of 2000 was the biggest I saw.

Even in the darkness I could hear the sounds of all the birds out on the shore.

It didn’t rain.
