Ruff in Swords
8.30am of a Saturday morning saw me out driving round last year’s sites in Crumlin looking for Brent Geese (or thier ‘messages’ in the grass telling me they’d been around). I didn’t really expect to see any inland so soon after being seen in Balbriggan last week, but I just wanted to make certain.
Anyhow, Sundrive cycle track, Pearse Park and the infamous Clonmacnoise roundabout were all Brent Geese free – for now.
It started to thunder and lightening (very, very frightening me, Galileo..) about 10am but luckily I was close enough to head home, watch Saturday Kitchen, then head back out once the rain had stopped.
Headed out to North Bull to see if any Brent Geese had flown South from Balbriggan.
I had seen that there was a Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper down at Broadmeadows Estuary down in Swords, so I drove out there, waited a while in the car until a rain storm passed then had a look.

Godwits - After the rain storm finished the sky didn't clear - so, more crap light photos to follow.

Ruff - with a better lens it'd be a great shot, love the reflection. Apparently there were 2 Ruffs down at Broadmeadows. I only saw this one. It was a gorgeous little bird I'd love to see again to watch for longer.
The Ruff seemed to enjoy sitting on this little rock, wade in the water to the left and eventually the water behind until it flew off.

Two rare species from Cork. Michael and Mark. If it wasn't for these two I wouldn't have seen the Ruff or the Curlew Sandpiper, they were really friendly and helpful and LOOK AT THEIR LENSES... the shots they were getting were amazing.

There were still plenty of Swallows at the estuary, Michael said they had also spotted a Swift (quite late for them still to be hanging around). Just look at the shape the Swallow gets into in flight.
I think if the light had have been better I would have stayed longer at Broadmeadows because a lot of the waders were really close and perfect for studying, but the light was quite bad and I was in half a mind to go down to Sandymount to see the Tern display. When Mark said they’d seen 1500 Terns the previous evening I decided I’d deffo drive down.

Portmarnock - a glimpse of why the planned pelagic for tomorrow had to be cancelled. Winds are supposed to be getting up to galeforce 6. Also, see how the kite has the same curve as the Swallow.
I’ve lived in Dublin for 12 years and never once needed to take the East link toll road. Tonight I paid my €1.70 toll and was in Sandymount from Bull Island in minutes – I’ll be doing that again.

Sand bed in the distance was where the terns were hanging out. I just parked in the free carpark and walked straight out - not 100% if this was where I was supposed to be watching from, but I still saw a great pre-roosting display.

Terns lifting, I would have guessed approx 800-1000 this evening, not the 1500 Mark saw yesterday and certainly not the 8000 of previous displays.

Terns landed. I couldn't say which Terns were out there, even with my scope they were too far out for me to see well enough to i.d
A cool days birding, despite the rain and bad light.
