Blackhorse Grand Canal walk

Wednesday 19 May, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

This evening, the sky looked like it was going to hold off with rain so I chanced another walk down the canal.
Photos this time.

The walk took about 50mins, I saw Swallows, Grey Wagtails, Greenfinches, Rooks, Blackbirds, Collard Dove, Wood Pigeon, Magpies, Starlings, Jackdaws, Mallards, Moorhens, House Sparrows, Blue Tits and the dead eel again.

Looking towards Drimnagh from Blackhorse, Grand Canal in the background.

Across the road is the start of the walk towards Kylemore Bridge

CCTV cameras at start of the walk.

The grassy side to the right and the new yellow brick road to the left.

From here you're 50m away from Blackhorse Luas stop, but you could be in the countryside, well except for the pylons.

You could still be in the countryside, I've seen a few of these around Military Road in Co. Wicklow.

On the canal, male Mallards

Swallow flying in front of an unfinished apartment block

Close up where you can see the blue on the back and red face of the Swallow.

Swallows over the canal

Swallows, white underneaths and long streamer tails

There were 2 Moorhens on the canal

There were also 2 Grey Wagtails

The odd couple, Collard Dove and Wood Pigeon.

There were loads of Greenfinches in the trees, this one was on a pylon.

There's a really fat (prob jeuv) House Sparrow in there somewhere

A Rook on a roof

This Starling on the left was mimicking the call of the Magpie so much that the Magpie flew off completely tormented.

I’ve just seen from my photos that there’s hardly any photos of greenery and trees – shame because it’s a really green walk, I just didn’t manage to catch any birds in the trees.

And I didn’t take any photos of the best bit of the walk which is down at the Kylemore Bridge.

Next time.

Oh yeah if anyone actually wants to see the photo of the dead eel I’ll post it – but it’s just a dead eel floating in the water and it’s kind of gross.

    Hiya

I love that walk along the canal past the Blackhorse but your right it can feel a bit unsafe at times. I’d say with it being done up it will start to generate more pedestrian traffic soon.

I haven’t walked it in a while & keep meaning to do so & see how far they have improved the walkway.

Hope you don’t mind I have been putting your Drimnagh posts onto this page in facebook for more people to see http://www.facebook.com/DrimnaghisGood

    Take care.

Looks like a nice walk. However I can also imagine it being very attractive to unsafe folk at times. CCTV is mainly used after the deed is done, isn’t it? seeing if they can spot the culprit.

It is a shame that the dead Eel has not had the opportunity to feed a Fox family, which could have done with such a big meal! I think there are lots of these lovely creatures around that area.

@Pauline, do you know what the walk is called? Or is it just ‘from blackhorse to Kylmore?’. It’s a nice walk isn’t it, I’d say about 30 people walked along the other side in the time I was there which is good going – it feels a lot safer than it used to down there now the yellow brick road is in place, the CCTV cameras are up and people are using the walkway for leisure, keeping fit, dog walking- saw about 10 cyclists, walkers and joggers. Great to see it being used – the more social it becomes, hopefully the safer it will feel. That’s fine about posting on the blogposts – they’re there to be read!
@Rhona, no I honestly don’t want to post the eel cos its gross! – just I’d never seen an eel before so if someone else wanted to see a photo of one – I’ve got one!
@Yoke, would a fox eat an eel? (I’m pulling a face) though I suppose people eat them, so why wouldn’t a fox, its just another fish isn’t it?

Great post (again!). I love the bit about the Starling mimicking the Magpie – we have them mimicking waders. We’ll hear what sounds like a Curlew flying over and dive outside only to find a Starling sitting on the roof (looking quite smug, I might add!)

@Sharon – no way! lol, I can’t believe they can make the sound of a Curlew! They’re completely amazing aren’t they? I’d love to hear that – although it would freak me out a little how intelligent they are.

I love the shot of the swallows in the power lines. The two flying look like F-14 in combat!
Well done to the photographer! I think its great your members document their walks, it makes the walks even more interesting?
